PLN 15

In Alfie Kohn’s School’s would be great if it weren’t for kids, it shows that students are a big portion of schools problems and that they don’t always try as hard as they should. Students don’t work to hard in school and people blame the teachers; it is really the students who are causing the problem. If students are not giving it their all in school then I want to be an exception, I want to give it a hundred percent the whole time so I can prepare myself for a successful life. If I slack around in school then I will never meet the goals of my life or get the skills I need for life. This matters to education because if students are dismal about school and not motivated because of the way they are being taught then schools need to take authority and change their ways of learning. But students also need to pick up their effort in school so they can learn more in class so all students can have bright and successful futures. If the learning techniques are changed then it will help students a lot in being motivated because some students might learn differently not understanding what is going on so they give up. This also matters to the world because if students are not as motivated then some teachers will lose jobs. As terrible as that is there will be a more catastrophic effect; students will not have the skills they need to be successful in life. Motivation is a large role in a student’s education, and it will affect the results of their education.

In Lauren Lee’s The Problem of Motivation students are not influenced to learn and go to school. Lee states that students are unwilling to go to school and her statement supports Shakespeare's quote "the whining schoolboy, with his satchel/ And shining morning face, creeping like a snail/ Unwillingly to school" (II.7.2.145–147) that students were lazy at four hundred years ago also. This matters because I don’t just pump myself up for school and I don't always want to be there. If that is the case then I won’t learn the material I need to and I won’t be able to figure out questions on the test or understand what I am supposed to do for the homework. That will affect my life later and hurt me in going to college because I won't have the skills I need. This also matters to education because if schools are teaching schools full of students that are not ready to learn then how will they learn anything and why do the teachers bother teaching. Some students are motivated for school because they want to be there, but for the average student I would say they would rather be doing something else once in a while which hinders their motivation toward learning. To the world if students are not motivated for school then how will they do in competing in a job spot, and where will it leave the United States as a nation. Students need to be motivated and ready to go to school each and every day.

In Jonathan Rosenberg’s Our Googley Advice to students: Major in Learning in this article Google talks about how they want their workers to be creative and non routine problem solvers. Google’s workers need analytical reasoning, communication games, willingness to experiment, be a team player, and passion and leadership which are qualities that apply to most of the jobs in the world. This matters to me because these skills will give me the best chance at a successful life. If the schools taught some of these skills and qualities then students in my opinion would help students do much better. This matters to education because they need to add these skills to the curriculum so we can learn how to do them and have more successful lives and not live lives of malovent beings wishing evil upon others.

In Will Richardson’s Better Learning or Better Learners? it talks about how students are being taught things in math, science, history, and english but how as a learner do we know how to interpret and take in what the teacher is saying. If students are being taught all of the concepts about their subjects but not understanding it then they should also be taught how to learn it. This article is so important because students are being taught valluable material but not being taught how to interpret it so it is being lost. Schools are taking the cheap way out and making teachers assign homework and tests, and does that really help the students? In my opinion yes and no we learn the material but is it the best way to learn the material? If students are not understanding how to remember the information put in front of them, then how will they learn. In my classes I know that I like how some teachers tell us what we need to be looking for and how to do everything, but in other classes the information put on the board does not stick wiith me at all and I struggle with that class. To education this matters because the schools are not doing their jobs if students are not learning the material that they need to because they don't know how to stick it in their mind. To the world if students are no learning the skills they need for college and later in life then how will they be able to be successful in life. That is Richardson's whole point in this article if a student wasn't taught how to learn how will they ever know what to do?

In Karl Fisch’s 2020 Vision it talks about how school will change drastically in our lifetime. The video talks about how school started using computer laptops in 2007 and then we started to communicate around the world with laptops. Next it states we won’t have classes and we will be learning directly from Google. This matters because it is a whole new form of learning that none of us have been through before and it could not all form to our liking. Sure it would be nice not having set classes anymore, but what if we didn’t learn that way and we couldn’t comprehend what the computer was saying. I wondered what if Google does open a free university though would kids try as hard in school knowing they have an easy outlet. I have focused on the bad so far but imagine the good, what if there was a free college, free computers to help learn, and different ways of learning. It would revolutionize school and education as we know it. If Google is this great philosopher and opens a university and revolutionizes learning would it be good or bad?

In Karlo Mikhail Mongaya’s Phillipines: Dancing Flight Attendents talks about how female dancing flight attendants demonstrate how to execute emergency procedures. This one video has had millions of views on the internet, and many people love the video. Why all of this matters is because some believe that it is sexist having female flight attendants dancing for the safety video, and for the long term affect many believe it will be negative. They think it will be negative because more people will view it as sexist than entertaining because it is using women in subjective ways. If I were the airline I never would have done this because I would think over the years it would negatively affect me and the airline. The airline is just trying to entertain their passengers but if it is being sexist it could come back to haunt them.

In Tony Wagner’s Rigor Redefined Tony writes about how jobs are looking for different skills that many people think are unusual such as problem solving, leadership, adaptability, initiative, communication, analyzing information, and imagination. Tony also believes that teachers are not preparing their students for the future as well as they could be. Many teachers are spoon feeding their students and not letting us apply ourselves therefore not preparing us for our future. This matters to me because I want to have all the skills I need to give me a good chance at getting a job I want. The teachers that aren’t making me apply myself and teaching me the skills I need to be successful need to change their style of teaching to adapt to the changing world. I feel as if many of the qualities jobs are looking for are very unique but also will my generation change the future to help us be philanthropists in the future. I also believe that if teachers are too lazy to teach the information without using the qualities jobs are looking for, then they should find different profession because we need teachers that will prepare us for the future generations and help us make a difference in the world.
